The 4 Key Steps To Personal Growth

Remember that one time your mom told you not to do something but you went and did it anyway? As soon as you did the thing you experienced and probably felt the negative consequences of that action. First you discovered the reason behind why your mom told you not to do it in the first place and then soon after I’m sure you were reprimanded. I bet you learned not to do that again! At the time of course you may have thought she was the most annoying person in the world for ruining your fun, but in reality she was just worried and wanted to keep you out of trouble. With life comes a lot of lessons to be learned and with those lessons comes personal growth. The road to personal growth consists of 4 different steps which include:

  • Do
  • Experience
  • Learn
  • Apply

Once you DO you gain a new EXPERIENCE in which you LEARN from and APPLY that new knowledge gained to your everyday life. Today we will be taking a look at these 4 steps and how the aid in the process of personal growth.

No matter how old you are, you’ll always find yourself curious about a particular action or thing. You see, us humans are curious creatures and sometimes we just like the excitement of pushing boundaries. The first step to personal growth is “DO” as in we do things out of curiosity. Going back to the above example you did the thing just to see what would happen. You wanted to see what new boundaries you could push and enjoyed the rush of excitement that comes along with it….which brings us to the next step…

Experience is the second step to personal growth and is gained once we carry out an action. After your mother told you not to do why you had done you quickly figured out why she told you not to do it in the first place. With every action, there will always be consequences associated whether good or bad. You recieved a negative reaction from your mother which ultimately lead to a bad consequence. In the future, you now know what to do it again and the reason behind why you just shouldn’t do it. Which brings us to the third step…

When we do things and gain new experiences from them, we learn and grow from them. After you gained the experience of doing what you did, you got a negative reaction out of it and hopefully learned not to ever do it again. With life comes various lessons to be learned that will help you along your journey. Those lessons taught to us throughout life are what helps you mature and ultimately become the best version of ourselves. Though it may seem like nothing at the time, these teachings can often influence your decision making skills later on in life. As you get older, you’ll find yourself making wise decisions over dumb ones. The reason behind this is because you learned right from wrong and have gained the common sense to think rationally. Learning doesn’t just stop at childhood, we continue to learn all throughout adulthood. Which brings us to the final step in the growth process…

So you learned a new and valuable lesson from the thing you did. Good for you! The last and final step in the personal growth process is “apply”. With the knowledge gained from the things we’ve done in life we can apply them to different situations. When you find yourself stuck in a less than favorable situation, you may find yourself stuck in a bind trying to figure out which direction to take it. There will always me multiple variables to every situation, each one with a different outcome. At this point it is up you to make the right decision and apply all that you’ve learned. This is where your common sense kicks in and help you make the right decision. You know what’s best for you and have weighed your options. Hopefully you’ll pick the right one to give you the best outcome possible.

As time goes on we learn new things that help mold us into the person that we are today. With each lesson comes growth to be applied to everyday life. With that being said, I want to what valuable life lesson has stuck with you throughout adulthood? Feel free to leave a comment below.

The DO part is especially important, because many of us tend to research and ‘prepare’ beforehand. We do that so much that we lose the momentum we would’ve gained from just doing (and learning more from said attempt) the thing anyway. Thanks for this post!
