Transitioning Into College

Q: What advice do you have for a young women transition into college away from their family for the first time?

A: Being away from your family for a long period of time, especially being fresh out of high school can be rough. It can definitely take a toll on you mentally and make your experience less than desirable. You’ll find yourself going through all sorts of emotions for excitability to sadness. It doesn’t have to be this way though! College is great time for new experiences and adventures.
Here are some things that you can do to help make the transition smoother:
1.) Make New Friends: Don’t be SCUUURRREED! Get out there and socialize! There will be thousands of students around you looking to make new friends. Those new friends you meet will make your college experience even better. Who know’s you may develop friendships that last a lifetime!
2.) Stay In Touch With Your Loved Ones: This is absolutely important to help maintain your sanity and stave away homesickness! Being homesick all the time is no fun to deal with and can even get in the way of your studies. Make sure to reach out to your hometown friends and family as often as possible. Whether you skype with them or chat on facebook, always maintain an open line of communication.
3.) Stay Focused: FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS! Getting that degree and keep those grades up should be your number one priority! Finish your assignments on time (preferably before the deadline) and don’t be afraid to ask questions. If there’s a party going on but you know you have a project due tomorrow, take the lame route and study! Those classes in college are no joke. Learn all you can in order to finish out strong!
4.) Explore The Area: A new city means new surroundings! Take advantage of the situation and explore the new area that you are in. You may end up finding a cool new spot to hang out and learn things about your new enviorment that you never knew!
