According to Psychology Today, about 10 million Americans develop SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder during the Winter time. If you begin to notice a shift in your mood occur just a little after the summer months, just know that you are not alone and it may be more than just a coincidence. Symptoms of SAD include:
- weight changes
- low energy
- difficulty concentrating
- feelings of sadness/hopefullessness.
Causes of SAD can either be due to the reduction of sunlight during both the fall and winter months along with genetics. Just like with major depression, SAD is no fun to deal with. If you find yourself slipping into that deep dark hole during the colder months, here’s what you can do to get yourself out of it.
I don’t know about you, but I lose my mind when I’m stuck inside all day. Sure I can entertain myself with tv and videos games, but after a while it gets old. One of the main causes of SAD is lack of sunlight due to daylight savings. You can find these wonderful lights in stores such as Amazon, Walmart, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It is best to get as much light as possible in order to eleviate your SAD symptoms. Avoid dark rooms if you can and make sure that your are getting as much light as possible.
Get your aromatherapy on with your favorite essential oils! Not only do they smell great but they can alter your mood in a positive way as well! Here are some of the best oils that can be used to elevate your mood:

Don’t just sit at home all day! Sitting at home all day does nothing but worsen your symptoms. Working out helps release endorphins which will definitely help ease your SAD symptoms. With that being said take initiative, put on your headphones along with some energetic music, and get to moving! Remember “No Pain, No Gain”. It might hurt for a little bit but you’ll definitely feel better later both physically and mentally! Whether you go to your local gym or jog outside, getting a good workout in is a great way to treat SAD.
