Struggling with Body Image Issues

Let’s get personal…

****warning: This article may be graphic and triggering for some people***

There are some days when I truly don’t feel how I look. I look in the mirror at myself and my head gets filled with all sorts of negative thoughts.

“I look ugly today…”

“I would look better if…”

“I’m fat and everything I put on makes me look like a pig..”

…and the list goes on. I’ve always been critical of myself. I can recall as a child, I would read through fashion magazines, look at the models, and think to myself “I wish I was as skinny as her.” My childhood was pretty rough. I constantly dealt with kids teasing me because I was a bit on the chubby side. I knew there was something wrong with me when I decided to start sticking my finger down my throat just to make myself vomit all of the contents of my stomach. I hated food and tried to avoid gaining weight at all costs, even if it meant slowly killing myself.

Though the teasing has stopped, to this day I still deal with body image issues. You can give me a compliment and I will still think low of myself. It sucks and I just wish I wasn’t so stuck in my head sometimes.

If you know of anyone dealing with body image issues, here’s what you should/shouldn’t do:

  • Don’t get mad at them… be there to listen. I know it can be frustrating to hear someone talk badly about themselves, but there is absolutely no needs to get mad or impatient with them. Trust me, it makes them feel worse than they already do.
  • Encourage them… to start a healthy diet plan in order to get to where they want to be.
  • Listen to them… for anyone struggling with mental health issues, to include body image issues, they need someone to listen to them and maybe even a hug. No one should have to suffer through this issue alone and it is always nice to have someone to vent to.

In conclusion, show kindness to everyone. You never know what that person could be going though. 💗

You’re welcome! I know it can definitely be difficult to deal with an eating disorder. You may finally reach your goal weight but still keep going because you’re still not satisfied with your body or you literally just can’t stop. I was lucky enough to stop when I did and get the help that I needed for it, otherwise I probably would not be here to write this post or respond. As long as you continue to keep that positive outlook, you will get through this! 🙂

You are so right! It’s important to listen to those dealing with body image issues. James 1:19 reminds me to be “quick to listen and slow to speak”. Everyone needs a listening ear at times.

Definitely! Listening and answering appropriately to the persons problem whether it’s body image issues or mental health in general is crucial. It lets the person know that you care and it can make them feel better about as well.
